#throwbackthursday Poem by local icon Jack Scheikowski, affectionately know as Condamine Jack My Akubra By Condamine Jack in 16/06/1999 It was many long years ago, Way back in sixty-four, I brought a new akubra hat, What a famous name it bore. It is a broad brimmed, fur felt hat, To shade you from the sun, They are worn by squatters, On their outback cattle run. The drovers also wear them, On stock routes and sunburnt plains, They got covered in bull dust, Were it seldom rains. Some blokes have to sides turned up, Most have the front turned down, But it doesn’t matter whatever you choose, It protects your precious old crown. Now mine has started to show the wear, In the passing of many a year, Being covered in dust, grease and grime, Some cases got covered in beer. It has fanned the fire for my quart to boil, To make a good bushman’s brew, Still my hat stood up to wear and tear, From the day it was brand new. It took ten bunnies to make my hat, With akubra brand inside, But it takes on bunny to wear it, And for sure I wear it with pride. I have a braid around the brim, And a patch upon the crown, But I’m the one who wears this hat, With the front turned down. Our youngest volunteers came to spread some Halloween cheer at the Village today. All ready to Trick-or-Treat. 🍭 The cutest little Witch🧙‍♀️and Vampire🧝you ever did see. 😀 Fun Fact: Did you know Halloween originated as a Celtic pagan festival known as Samhain that dates back to more than 2,000 years. In Celtic times, October 31 was the end of the year and Samhain was the end of summer, when crops had been harvested and the darkest period of the year began. The festival would see people light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. It’s incredible to imagine how many hands were involved, each step filled with care as butter moved from cream to block. The fact that it was packed 56 to a box just speaks of an efficiency born from sheer necessity. 🥛🥛🥛🥛🥛🧈🧈🧈🧈🧈 You can almost hear the clatter of the cans as those farmers on the list woke at dawn to milk their cows, filling metal cans with fresh milk and hoisting it onto carts 🐄🐄🐄🐄 Breathing in the dust kicking up on the long drive to the butter factory 🐎🐎 What a journey it must have been, connecting this vast land to the quiet hum of the dairy. In its heyday, the Darling Downs Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd boasted 259 loyal suppliers🐄🐮🐄🐮 However, by 1968, the factory's operations ended, marking the end of an era. #throwbackthursday Prickly pear was first introduced to Australia by Governor Phillip at Port Jackson in 1788, likely for a cochineal industry to produce scarlet dye used in British soldiers' red coats. Though the fate of the initial plantation is unclear, other species spread, reaching Queensland and the Western Downs by 1843 🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵 Earlier generations will recall how the invasive plant overtook the landscape, forming dense, four-foot-tall barriers that made travel almost impossible. Despite control efforts like burning, poisoning, and a government reward for eradication, the prickly pear continued to dominate large areas into the early 20th century 🌵🌵🌵🌵 The Prickly Pear Travelling Commission, formed in 1912, sought natural enemies of the pear. After WWI halted research, it resumed in 1919. Several insects were introduced, with varying success 🐛🐛🐛🐛 The cactoblastis moth, reintroduced in 1924, proved the most effective, destroying large stands of prickly pear by 1932. It was a treat to welcome Hilda Heffernan together with Jean and Malcolm to help celebrate the Village's 53rd Anniversary Day. A beautiful day allowing visitors to have fun in the sun and experience some good old-fashioned games and memorabilia. The children enjoyed participating in egg & spoon, 3 legged races and sack races. Delicious scones with jam and cream were served in the Red Rose Cafe along with old-time spiders which went down a treat on a hot day. Visitors were able to view Callum's blacksmithing skills as well as the impressive lapidary machinery in action under the watchful eye of Pete. Thanks to David and crew, it was fantastic to see the 1929 Durant and the recently restored Condamine Jack’s 1938 Ford Truck out and about ready to take people for a ride. A lovely Sunset Tour enjoyed by Gisela, Ross, Janine, John and Ros on Wednesday evening. Complimentary drinks and nibblies were enjoyed in the pergola watching the sunset presenting some gorgeous colours across the streetscape. Kerry and Shirley shared some great stories on the historical collections with their guests as they explored the Village. Recent installation of new floodlights has brightened up the street enhancing the visibility of displays around the Village. This initiative will also improve the safety of our visitors during Sunset Tours and for evening events such as our popular Dinner Under the Stars. The Floodlight Upgrade project was enabled through the generous funding of the Western Downs Regional Council Infrastructure Grant. We wish to acknowledge and thank the Western Downs Regional Council for their continuous support of the Historical Village Museum and enabling us to upgrade the floodlight system. #ThrowbackThursday Carl Duffel’s Goat Cart 🐐🐐 In the 1900s these goat carts were part of the scene in Miles with trunks and suitcases being moved from the railway station to hotel rooms by young carters keen to earn a few pennies 🛎️💰 Carl made this goat cart for his grandchildren, the Rayner’s of “Moraby” at Condamine who would haul water from the creek and loads of firewood to their property 🪵🪣 Goats played a key role in the pioneer settlement of Queensland. Early pastoralists, timber cutters and railway construction workers took goats with them as they moved inland. #ThrowbackThursday Wow, we are overwhelmed by your response to our mystery device. We can reveal the name of the device as being a Petaluma Incubator (circa 1915-1930). It was indeed used to incubate eggs🥚🥚🥚 Petaluma is a city in California. Moisture is supplied to the egg chamber by placing water into the pan beneath the egg tray. Heat from the kerosene oil lamp assists the evaporation of the water and raises the humidity of the atmosphere in the chamber. Carried to Safety One of Miles’ World War II veterans, QX62133 Trooper Eric Douglas Geldard, has a unique connection with the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’. Eric first enlisted in the R.A.A.F. and then transferred to the 2/9 Commando Squadron A.I.F. in New Guinea. Whilst on patrol on 26 July 1945, Eric was wounded in both legs. Eight Papuans carried Eric back down the steep track to the casualty clearing station at Cape Wom. By the end of his five hour trek, Eric was unconscious and unable to thank his rescuers. 50 Years later, Eric had the opportunity to personally thank one of the men who carried him, the late Raphael Oimbari. Both attended the 50th Anniversary VP celebrations in Townsville, where Raphael was invited to represent the people of New Guinea who helped Australian soldiers. Eric continued to serve the Miles community as President of the Miles R.S.L. and Vice President of the Miles & District Historical Society Inc where he was directly involved in establishing the military collection as its inaugural curator. A Symbol of Loss During the First World War, one in four Australian families lost a husband, son or brother. They could be waiting months before any official word of a loved one’s passing. Contradictory accounts would make the news heartbreaking and inconclusive with conflicting reports long after they had been killed. Official memorial tokens were given to the surviving family members of the service personnel who lost their life in the War in addition to their personal keepsakes. Entitled 'Dead Man's Penny', this bronze tribute of Lady Britannia features two dolphins encircling it along with a lion standing over an eagle. Behind each of these pennies is a story of a life lost and the accompanying anguish of loved ones left to grieve. A lovely morning meeting members of the Raine/Jenkinson family who gathered in Miles for a family reunion, travelling from Brisbane, Kingaroy, Mundubbera, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Yeppoon. The group were treated to a delicious Devonshire Tea in the Red Rose Café before exploring the Village at their leisure. John Raine had some interesting family history on display in the rotunda for the family to view. A fascinating family history of true pioneers! Two brothers, Robert Raine and Joseph Raine left Scotland aged 16 and 17. After living in various locations, they settled in Dulacca around 1909 having selected land on which they had to clear the prickly pear. An area of land was named Raineville after the Raine family who put the money up to build the South Dulacca School in 1912. The school eventually closed in 1940. The only structure still standing from the school is the old dunny! Some of the 3rd generation members of the family were christened in the Dulacca Church which now stands in our museum. The majority of the visiting group are original descendants of Joseph Raine and his wife Jeanie who had 5 sons and 2 daughters. An interesting story - two Jenkinson brothers from Kilcoy married two sisters, Jean and Joyce, daughters of Joseph Raine. This extended the Raine family on the Jenkinson side of the family tree. One of Joseph’s sons, Victor, worked in the logging industry and operated the last working bullock team in the Kilcoy area. The group ventured out to Dulacca on Saturday to view the property where the family originally settled and the site of the old school followed by a moving visit to the Dulacca Cenotaph. A wonderful lunch on the deck of the Dulacca Hotel was enjoyed by all. It was a pleasure to meet you all. Where were the First Miles Cow Yards? Hinges on the coach house at the Miles Historical Village were made and stamped by Christy Andersen who was a blacksmith in Miles in 1910. The hinges were originally on the first saleyards which were behind Fogarty’s old Queensland Hotel. They were then moved to the horse yards at the Miles Showground and then to the Coach House at the Historical Village Museum. Does anyone remember the old cow yards where it was said that sales were held periodically with yardings of over a hundred head a novelty? In 1913 a company was floated and the Miles Co-operative Saleyards Ltd became one of a few centres that had saleyards owned by stockholders. Miles Co-operative Saleyards were built south of the railway line behind the wheat silos. Weaner sales were started by Mactaggarts in 1940 and by the late 1950’s Miles set the weaner prices for the entire State of Queensland. Weaner sales continued to break records of the previous year until the end of the 1960’s. Congratulations Chris on the official opening of your Art Gallery at Possum Park. 🎉 A wonderful Sunday afternoon was enjoyed by members of the Miles Art Group and friends celebrating the opening of this unique art gallery. Chris has transformed one of the old train carriages into a light and airy studio in which to showcase his artworks and visitors are welcome to watch Chris in action as he weaves his magic. Possum Park is a fantastic camping facility on an historical site 20km north of Miles previously named RAAF Kowguran and offers numerous camping options. This beautiful green Station Buggy was once owned by the Coglan family in Yuleba and would carry the family on social occasions. Drawn by two horses it was a utilitarian vehicle which could be used as a quick runabout on the property and was also capable of carrying light fencing gear to drive round the boundary, or to run out to see a bore or windmill. The station buggy was used up to the 1940's and was donated by Mr Bishop. A bit of history on our C17 Steam Engine. 🚂 Engine #994 – a superheated unit of C17 class is one of 20 locomotives built by Clyde Engineering Sydney in 1950 for Queensland Railways. Specs: 🔺4-8-0 denotes 4 coupled wheels 🔺C17 denotes 17” diameter cylinder 🔺Maximum boiler pressure 175lbs per square inch 🔺Valve gear Walschaert The relocation of the #944 spells an interesting story. When the steam engine arrived on the lines at the station of Miles, Bud Ford (President) received a phone call from the Stationmaster advising of the arrival and requesting that the steam engine be moved off the line. Word got around and a number of railway workers volunteered their time to assist with the relocation. A temporary rail line was laid along (now Morgan Street), across the highway and into the Village grounds where she still stands today. What an amazing re-creation of our special C17 Steam Locomotive 944! Darryn Campbell and the Miles Respite Group spent many hours on this project reproducing the steam locomotive from photographs of the original at the Village. The finished acrylic on wood artwork titled "Dogwood Express" is absolutely amazing. Those smiling faces in the carriage says it all! The train has been one of their signature items within the group's collection displayed on the Curved Wall at Dogwood Crossing. Darryn has been doing some fantastic work with the Respite Group and is a very deserving recipient of the Local Creative Arts Awards - Miles & District received on Australia Day.
