About the Village

Developed as a pioneer settlement with a village street to portray the workings of an early Queensland rural town, the Village is recognised as being the best of its type in Queensland.  The grounds contain 34 buildings of which 15 are historic structures relocated from the local area; 10 are replica buildings and 9 are purpose-built.

The streetscape and collections predominately cover a period in Queensland’s rural history from the late 1860’s to the 1950’s and have extensive local historic significance. They illustrate the living and working conditions of the Miles district’s early pioneering history; the businesses, services and industries that served them; and the endeavours of the local rural sector. The buildings and their collections contribute to one’s understanding of many major past processes and patterns of life, such as education, medical services, religion, dairying, land and water management and retail businesses; and may be useful in researching activities and methods used in a range of industries within the region.

We are excited to announce that we are in the planning stages of renovations to the Artesian Basin Centre which also houses our Indigenous Display.  These collections are currently unavailable for viewing however we will announce the opening of the new displays as soon as completed.
